Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Isle of Wight, Julian Critchley, attended a meeting of the Island’s Visually Impaired People group at Yelf’s Hotel in Ryde on Saturday.
The potential MP listened to the group’s concerns about support for visually impaired people on the Island and spoke about how Labour’s manifesto promises would help.
Julian Critchley said:
“On the weekend when all candidates are asked to spend some time with voluntary organisations in memory of the late Jo Cox MP, it was great to be able to meet and chat with the VIP group.
“The members of the group were quick to remind me of the old phrase that “all politics is local,” and they spoke about the need for the extra support which would ease some of life’s challenges. In particular, the issue of talking buses was raised, and that’s something I hope a Labour government could help with, as we would lift the Conservatives’ ban on new non-profit bus companies being established by local authorities.
“Too often, even well-meaning people only see the disability, not the person. Yet in every respect this was a group of voters like any other: actively engaged citizens concerned about all sorts of issues from defence policy, through the care system, and on to the NHS more generally.
“I would like to thank the organiser, Laura Gardiner, for inviting me, and the members for being so welcoming”.
