A proposal for ‘high quality’ and ‘boutique’ en-suite bed and breakfast rooms at a West Wight pub has been granted conditional planning permission.
Character Inns IOW sought a change of use of the first and second floors of The Kings Head in Yarmouth as well as consent for associated works to deliver the accommodation.
Andrew White Planning Consultancy previously said the proposal will significantly benefit the pub enabling it to ‘continue and thrive’ for many years to come.
It follows a listed building consent application for internal changes within the Kings Head to create the five en-suite bedrooms, approved in December 2024.
The Kings Head is temporarily closed and is expected to reopen on or before May 1, according to CAMRA.
County Hall’s decision report for application 25/01474/FUL said:
“The proposal is for internal alterations to form five B&B rooms, one of which is a family suite, comprising a bathroom and 3 bedrooms. These rooms are to be used in association with the operation of the public house.
“To create B&B rooms with ensuite facilities, alterations are required which mainly relate to the interior of the building.
“Listed building consent application 24/01615/LBC was approved in December 2024 for the proposed alterations with conditions applied. Most of the conditions have since been discharged.”
Officers concluded the scheme was compliant with Island planning policies and legislation.
In a recent statement on social media, the pub said:
“We’ve been working hard on a major refurbishment to bring this historic pub back to life.
“Unfortunately, ongoing building works mean that the pub itself is currently unable to open as planned.
“We’re working closely with building control throughout the final stages of the project to ensure everything meets the highest standards and that the building is 100 per cent safe and ready before we welcome guests through the doors.
“While this means the reopening will be slightly delayed, it’s the right thing to do to make sure everything is completed properly.”

Sounds great, but I do miss sitting by the open fire with a drink
and tucking into a roast.
