Jay Morris’ Assassins Boxing Club put on an entertaining show for Isle of Wight boxing fans at Gurnard Pines last Saturday (2nd December). Up first was an exhibition fight between Patrick Swanson and Jamie Wrighty after Patrick’s opponent pulled out. This was a great fight between 2 fighters showcasing skills and combination punching. Both boxers are ones to look out for in the future. Next up was Assassin boxer Aiden Aisher, who has only been boxing a few months and gave a really good account of himself in losing a close decision to Southampton’s Revolution boxer Michal Niesytomichrs in an entertaining bout. The 3rd fight was between Assassins James Dale and Scott La Roche. Both fighters had a great hard-fought battle and caught each other with some bombs. James was given a count at one point. The fight itself was scored a draw, but most spectators thought Scott should have been given a win. Assassin Andrew Sawkins fought Will Castle next. It was a close contest with Will just doing enough to keep in front and win a close decision. In the following bout, Kieran Allen stopped his opponent Curtis ‘the Turk’ in round 2 with a badly broken nose. Cailemb Wolsey then fought against Billy Bessey fighter Takudzwa Mukahiwa for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. Cailemb started well using his jab but it didn’t take long for his opponent to start landing punches, with Cailemb leaving his chin in the air. Once Takudwza found his mark, it was only a matter of time before he forced the stoppage. Cailemb lost the fight but managed to raise several hundred pounds towards charity. The next contest was an all-Island affair between Zak Younie and Danny Payne. It started slowly with both being patient and trying to force the other to make mistakes. In Round 2, Zak pushed on and won the round and, by the 3rd round, he opened up and caught Danny with some bombs before referee Darren Green stopped the fight with a few seconds to go. Next up was Callum v Billey Bessey’s Jake Orchard. This fight was 3 similar but entertaining rounds of Callum using his jab and cross to pick Jake off as he tried to get close and work on the inside. Jake didn’t stop trying the whole fight and did get some success, but Callum was a worthy points decision winner. Hard puncher Jacob Benger-Pereira fought in the following bout, and he had a good battle with David Panait as both attacked each other with bombs and combinations, but a dog fight suits Jacob and his opponent quit in the 3rd round as Jacob moved to 2-0. The main event was brought forward as Wayne Williams took on ex-professional Daniel Coker. Daniel talks a good fight but doesn’t deliver, and Wayne jumped straight on him and knocked him over after about a minute. Up last was the biggest ticket seller – Andy Rann – who was up against Dillion Tomlinson. Round 1 was close and probably even. In Round 2, Dillion took control and landed some bombs. In the 3rd round, Andy put Dillon over to win in dramatic style. After the contests, Jay Morris said:
“What an amazing show it turned out to be with many things going on behind the scenes that could’ve ruined the night. “The ring came over 2 hours later than planned and then the sudden fog cancelled ferries, so 5 fighters couldn’t get across, and we had to keep alternating the running order to accommodate people wanting to leave before they got stranded. “However, yet again the Assassins worked through and provided an excellent night.”
