Neighbours and passers-by helped prevent a garden fire from spreading to a house in Ryde this afternoon (Monday), with the quick-thinking locals praised by the homeowner.
Firefighters from Ryde rushed to the scene off Mayfield Road at around 14:00, following reports that a hedgerow and fecne were alight.
Speaking to Island Echo, property owner Peter Clarke has said:
“I was at the front room when the fire started in the back garden. It was the speed of neighbours and passers by in raising the alarm that prevented the fire spreading to the house.”
Hose reel jets were used to extinguish the blaze, with crews returning to station at around 14:30. It remains unclear as to what caused the fire.

“With dry and warm weather continuing the risk of wildfires remains high and we’re urging everyone to take extra care when enjoying the outdoors:
- Never light barbecues, campfires or fire pits in the countryside
- Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials safely
- Take litter home with you – glass bottles can magnify sunlight and start fires
- Call 999 immediately if you spot a fire
“In the current conditions fires can escalate rapidly, destroying wildlife and natural habitats, as well as tying up our firefighters and fire engines for many hours.”

strangely ‘fire fighting’ is not one of the listed exceptions to the hosepipe ban…
as long as we stop using water, to make up for souther water’s lack of investment into repairs and infrastructure,.. it’s OK..
as long as nothing affects their share-holder dividends, and executive bonuses, it doesn’t matter if it results in your house burning down…
Pretty sure this might of been caused by 3 teenage boys in the area, there was another fire around the corner a few month back and the day before this there was an incident with bins being thrown in the middle of the road
