Rising stars, global champions and grassroots heroes were honoured at Medina Theatre on Thursday night.
From 7-year-old gymnasts to nonagenarian bowlers, the 51st Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards celebrated the full spectrum of Isle of Wight sport at a packed Medina Theatre.
The WRS-sponsored event recognised not only elite performers competing on the world stage, but also the volunteers who keep clubs thriving across the Isle of Wight.
Among the youngest winners was 7-year-old Emma Penney, already excelling in artistic gymnastics, while 10-year-old Harrison Carter claimed the junior boys’ award following his sailing success.
At the other end of the scale, 92-year-old Jim Munro was nominated for his achievements in lawn bowls, while 75-year-old Trevor Thorne received the prestigious Service to Sport award.
The Bay CE School in Sandown secured both the primary and secondary honours, while netball stalwart Chris Grimes received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

A special Island Games section saw golfer Sophie Beardsall recognised for her double gold in Orkney, with the Isle of Wight sailing team also honoured after a dominant performance.
The event was hosted for the first time by the newly-formed Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards company, with proceeds supporting the Isle of Wight Sports Foundation.
Director Claire Beasley said:
“The amazing stars of Isle of Wight sport shone brightly tonight — not just the players but the volunteers who underpin our sporting community.”
Closing remarks were given by HM Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Susie Sheldon.
SERVICE TO SPORT: TREVOR THORNE
Trevor Thorne has spent more than 60 years at the heart of Isle of Wight sport.
Now 75, he has dedicated 50 years to Shanklin FC as a player, official and driving force behind the club.
He helped build the clubhouse in the 1980s and more recently played a key role in securing funding and overseeing a £50,000 redevelopment.
Trevor has managed teams, refereed matches and supported generations of players, including helping a young Lee Probert on a pathway to the Premier League and the 2014 FA Cup Final.
His contribution extends beyond football, supporting Ryde Cricket Club, local charities and continuing to play bowls — winning the Isle of Wight Division 2 title in 2024/25.
His nomination described him as a calming influence with a lasting impact on grassroots sport.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: CHRISTINE GRIMES
Christine Grimes has shaped Isle of Wight netball for more than 30 years.
A founding member of Solent Netball Club, she helped guide the team to the Southampton Division 1 title and promotion to the Premier League — a first for an Isle of Wight side competing on the mainland.
She has served as a development lead, coaching and umpiring mentor, and created pathways for players across the Isle of Wight.
A committee member for over 20 years, she has held roles including Development Officer, League Secretary and Coaching Lead.
Although no longer playing, she remains a constant presence at training and matches, continuing to support players and coaches.
ISLAND GAMES INDIVIDUAL: SOPHIE BEARDSALL
Sophie Beardsall claimed double gold at the Island Games in Orkney.
She delivered a decisive putt to secure victory for her team, focusing entirely on the team result.
Only afterwards did she realise she had also secured individual gold.
Her performance and humility have made her an inspiration to fellow competitors.
ISLAND GAMES TEAM: SAILING SUCCESS
The Isle of Wight sailing team dominated from start to finish in Orkney.
Arthur Farley, Harry White, Olly Mayo and Oli Smith, coached by Tony Burton, secured team and individual gold medals with races to spare.
Their winning margin was among the largest in Island Games history.
Three of the 4 sailors also claimed individual medals, including 2 golds and a bronze, in a performance defined by both quality and teamwork.
