Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson has described a damning Care Quality Commission (CQC) report into Isle of Wight Council’s adult social care services as making for “pretty bad reading”.
The CQC this week rated the authority’s adult social care services as ‘requires improvement’, highlighting delays in support, long waiting times and concerns over equality of access.
Inspectors also criticised hospital discharge arrangements, warning that a “risk-averse approach” had resulted in too many people being placed into residential care when they may have been able to return home with suitable support.
The report found some residents were reaching crisis point before receiving support, while delays in finalising care plans left others uncertain about how their needs would be met.
Inspectors also raised concerns over occupational therapy waiting times and support for unpaid carers, with some reassessments reportedly not carried out for up to 4 years.
Despite the criticism, the CQC praised the council’s senior leadership team and highlighted above-average access to emergency respite support for carers.
Speaking on the report, MP Robertson has said:
“The CQC report into the Isle of Wight Council makes for some pretty bad reading, particularly around hospital discharges. I recognise that there are challenges locally with lack of care home capacity, but the CQC finds that the Council is placing too many people into residential care when they could be returned home instead, which is where most people would prefer to be.

I disagree, and have told the Minister for Care that we need specific support on the Island where the challenges are particularly acute. I have written to Councillor James Whelan, the new Chair of the Council’s Adult Social Care Committee, urging him to resolve these issues urgently and I have offered my support to help him do so.”

As Whelan is not only the Chair of the ASCC, but also the Leader of Reform, Robertson is being hypocritical offering “support”, given what he has already said about Reform and he has probably informed Badenough that he will do his best to make sure Whelan fails whilst outwardly given the false impression of “support”.
This sort of behaviour is the reason why there are only 3 Tories anywhere on this island – 1 M.P. and 2 Councillors.
In three years time there will be NONE!
so, if “Whelan is not only the Chair of the ASCC, but also the Leader of Reform” then unless they (reform) are as useful as a chocolate fireguard, he should be able to get it sorted easily.
Somehow, in spite of all reform’s claims of being a power for change for the better, I doubt anything will happen to improve things…

The crisis in social care is not new and not limited to the Isle of Wight. Mr Robertson did nothing to fix it when he was a councillor and his party did nothing during the 14 years they were in government. To start sabre rattling now is disingenuous to say the least.
Nope your absolutely right and to know how small the Island is in comparison to Bradford and know they are number one in lack of funding,social workers,child and adult care and other branches of Social care and we are number 2!!in whole of UK jog on Joe you have done b….r all in your time to help anybody on The Island in need,after all you will be er be in need of anything related to Social care will you?words are easily said,action takes a strength you don’t possess.
