An Isle of Wight woman has completed the first of 2 marathons in just 1 week as part of a personal endurance challenge celebrating midlife strength and resilience.
Rachel Richards, 53, crossed the finish line at the Manchester Marathon on Sunday, completing the 26.2-mile course using a strategic run-walk approach to preserve energy for her second race – the London Marathon – taking place just 7 days later.
The challenge, titled “53 at 53,” will see Rachel cover a total of 53 miles across the 2 events.
“I made a conscious decision to pace the first marathon conservatively, I walked more than I usually would, which allowed me to enjoy the atmosphere, chat to other runners, and most importantly, finish strong knowing I have another marathon ahead this weekend.”
Rachel, a Healthy Habits Coach and founder of WightWays, hopes her challenge will inspire others – particularly women over 40 – to rethink what is possible later in life.
“There’s a growing shift in endurance events where participation is becoming more inclusive,”
“You don’t have to be an elite runner to take part. You can walk, jog, run – it’s about finding your way to the finish line.”
Having completed the Manchester Marathon, Rachel is now in recovery mode before travelling to London later this week to take on the second leg of her challenge.
Rachel is sharing updates from both events on her social media channels, where she documents her training, nutrition, and race-day experiences.
