Island Roads is continuing to respond to a ‘perfect storm’ of weather conditions that have created a recent increase in the number of potholes on the road network.
A hot, dry summer followed by prolonged rainfall and below-freezing temperatures have, unfortunately, created the ideal conditions for potholes to form.
In January alone, at the height of the cold snap, there were 354 reports of potholes received by Island Roads. Gangs have been working flat out to repair these in line with national safety requirements.
At times, additional resources have been deployed to ensure these requirements were met. Currently, while teams remain out on the network, there is no backlog.
Although Island Roads staff keep a regular eye on the network, residents are advised to report any potholes they come across. The best way of doing so is online via the Fix My Street service via the home age of www.islandroads.com.
New updated information on the types of potholes and their causes have also been added to the Island Roads website and can be viewed here https://islandroads.com/factsheets/.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, has said:
“The weather has provided the perfect conditions for potholes to form, which is why we’re seeing a marked increase in the number of road defects across the Island.
“We have made a huge investment in our roads and pavements through our PFI contract which enables us to have well-connected communities and improved highways which meet the Councils objectives and provide the best Highways network possible.
“The Island’s road and pavement surfaces are among the best we have ever had and favourably comparable to any other area in the UK but we will ensure that potholes reported to us are investigated and we will make a prompt and effective repair where necessary.’’

Is it the 1st April they say potholes are being filled and there is no backlog I think Island roads inspectors need to go to Specsavers they must have special suspension on their vans so they don’t feel the bumps.
What total and utter bull sh*t. And you publish it. OMG.
“The Island’s road and pavement surfaces are among the best we have ever had and favourably comparable to any other area in the UK”
Lol. I’ve seen better roads in Bulgaria. Island roads are utterly useless.
Is that photo before or after they filled them?
Even island roads do not know.
After their highly trained experts have stamped a bit of tarmac into the hole, had 6 tea breaks and played with teir phones for an hour.
So it’s all the fault of the weather now then. Not at all down to the shoddy work that Island Roads do that leave half of the work unfinished. That smell in the air isn’t fresh tarmac.
Saw a member of staff for ISLAND TOADS stamp on a snail today.I went over and said why did you do that? They replied that ars%hole had it coming it has been following me around all day.
Who writes this stuff it is comedy gold(best road surfaces we ever had).Do ISLAND TOADS just drive round with their eyes shut?I could find them 50 potholes within 1hour and not even have to leave my postcode.Absolute joke of a firm.
Try driving down Victoria Avenue in Shanklin. Dodging the craters is no fun. They must have smoother road surfaces in Kyiv.
Try George street, mind you if the farce of the cycle race goes ahead thelucky residents on the route will have nice new roads.
And that’s after Rusdsian missiles have landed.
If you go on the website to notify about potholes, the system requires that you ring them to complain about an urgent problem. Why?? What is wrong with running the system online? Obviously, they assume that people won’t have time to ring them and I don’t because I am busy actually working hard (unlike Island Roads).
Then I suggest they have a look along Fairlee road, I play dodge the ruts and holes every day. I recently know of a relative in the back of a ambulance, and near the turn off for the Waterboard they slow right down and warn the passengers at the same time.
Been like that for years!! Same as Great Preston Road. Resurfaced side streets and left these, too expensive??
The best bit is.. they also have the speed scamera on the other side of the road! As if anyone can even do the legal limit along there!
But wait,….lack of money or something?
Well there is a lovely brand new dual surfaced road into Mews Lane to take that 1 fool on the bike that goes that way? What I want to know is, who polices this company to check what they actually do? Filling and refilling the same holes…not pot holes now…but skip holes..Great work if you can get it.
Just shows what a SHI#SHOW this firm are.Aparently they resurfaced the worst bits of Fairlee road recently. How on earth did they leave this bit between the private hospital and the solar farm?Potholes deep ruts splits and cracks the whole length.Do any TOADS ever drive along here?
It wont be long before a lawnmower is needed on the path on downlands view in shanklin and the path is only a few years old. We must have very strong moles on the island
Best we every have, if that’s all you can come up with you shouldn’t have bothered potholes everywhere and very uneven surfaces, water runoff miss drains completely, drains only seems to be cleared when they’re blocked, even then you need to report it, don’t seem to use any common sense, the stewards must drive by these frequently when they’re blocked, they don’t care but they don’t have to when you have a council like the Isle of Wight council, just keep putting the council tax up and getting less for it time and time again
They made a mess of Great Preston road, and by the Smallbrook junction. Why did they not do the area with all the pot holes near Smallbrook Lane as well.. ? The new surface is so lumpy, guess they used the back of a spoon to flatten it…or did they just shuffle their feet on it.. do they not have a road roller, or know how to use one.. ? Most other paces use a road leveller first…
So yet another BODGE job done. No wonder it was finished before time…
Agree! And there is still a bit that hasn’t been done and it is getting worse every day.
“The Island’s road and pavement surfaces are among the best we have ever had and favourably comparable to any other area in the UK”. I suggest they come to Ventnor and look at Alpine Road and the road past the Botanic Gardens. I’ve seen farm tracks better than those two roads. Also a lot of the roads they have so called surfaced are in very poor state.
My nephew said he really would like a cowboy outfit for his birthday. After making enquires I found out ISLAND ROADS is not for sale.Guess I will get him a Xbox instead.
They refill the holes with something called foambase.
Basically it’s the old tarmac being recycled with some cement and tar.
Their literally fly tipping their waste product in our paths and streets.
Think of the savings they are getting by not disposing properly.
What about the pothole by the zebra crossing bottom of newport high street been there at least 2 weeks u cant avoid it !!
What happened to the £6.1 million received from the MoJ to repair the roads on the old prison estates?
They’ve renewed 10metres of pavement tarmac outside an ex councillors house and that’s it.
Living up to the island motto ‘it’s who you know not what you know ‘
The roads are worst now than they were 10yrs ago.
my sat nav thinks I’m taking a shortcut across the moon
Let the TOADS see the roads.
NEED A QUICK FIX OR BODGE JOB.Who you gonna call ghostbusters no call ISLAND TOADS they have screwed up the roads.
Does Councillor Jordon ever go out of his house? If he did he wouldn’t make such ridiculous statements.Island roads are generally in a disgusting state. How much does he take from our Council Tax?
What a load of b…….x, try having a look at the massive crater in Westhill road Shanklin outside the cricket club, island roads are a disgrace, and dont get me started about their management of road closed and diversion signage, they have not got a bloody clue.
All councillors and so called workers for Island roads, are C…., and they know they are. The other month I went up to one of the so called workers and a Councillor in the street and called them C…, and walked off, great satisfaction I had.
