ISLAND CLUBS WORK TOGETHER FOR WEEKEND ROWING

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe three Island Rowing Clubs got togeather on Saturday to overcome the transportation issues and depleted teams caused by the Isle of Wight Festival with Ryde providing the boat trailer and Newport the towing vehicle to transport all three clubs boat and equipment to the mainland with the clubs sharing the cost.

The effort was worthwhile for the Ryde Club as their Men’s Junior Senior Four of Andy Hicks, Adam Edwards, Ollie Gove and James Cleary with coach Mick Jenner coxing secured their fifth consecutive win to take a firm grip on this Hants & Dorset Championship and pretty much guarantee that they will be selected to represent the Association at the South Coast Championship at Swanage in September.

There were further good performances from the Ladies Junior Pair of Jodie Cocker and Steph Kissick – and Men’s Senior Sculler Mick Jenner who both finished 2nd in their event – Boys J16 Single Sculler – Steven Soal – who finished 3rd against older opposition – and for Men’s Novice Sculler Andy Hicks who finished 4th.

The young Men’s Novice crew of Ben Toms, Steven Soal, Jacob Redstone and Matt Jacob with Andy Hicks coxing raced well in their heat to finish in 5th place – but missed out on a place in the final – and then competed in the Boys J16 Fours race where they were unfortunate to suffer from equipment failure when their rudder line snapped at the start forcing their withdrawl from the race.
