W Hurst & Son has announced that due to the latest national lockdown and new restrictions in place, they will be closing all their stores to the public today (Tuesday) until further notice.
Hurst is classed as a hardware store, which is allowed to remain open under national restrictions. However, all 6 stores – Ventnor, Ryde, Cowes, Freshwater, Shanklin and Newport – will see their doors closed from 17:15 today.
They will continue to run a click & collect service from their Newport branch (car park), accessed from Crocker Street, along with online orders and Island-wide deliveries during weekdays only.
You can place your order either online at www.hurst-iw.co.uk or call them on 01983 523636.
A spokesperson for Hurst said:
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but our main concern is the safety of our staff & customers during this difficult time.
“Please note the click & collect service & Island delivery service will only be available Monday – Friday.
“We would appreciate your patience during this time as some delays may occur”

From the start it should have been compulsory for EVERYONE to have to wear a face mask or covering, NO EXCEPTIONS, NO ONE CLAIMING THEY ARE “EXEMPT”. It’s bad enough with all the drug and alcohol abusers going around bare faced but why so many seemingly fit and able young people not wearing masks? No wonder it’s spread around so much now. Hursts in Ryde seemed reasonably safe but I can understand them feeling the need to protect their staff.
Obviously havent got a clue about invisible disabilities have you? Yes there will always be people taking advantage but there are still people that have got legitimate reasons not to wear face coverings.
Think before you comment.
Not all illnesses are visible.
I am well aware of that, suffering from severe anxiety myself, but seeing young women with face full of make up, that maybe they don’t want to smudge by wearing a mask and an arrogant self satisfied attitude to go with it, and others talking loudly on their phones throughout the whole bus journey which they travel on every evening from their place of employment. People wearing lanyards are very few and far between and they are not the ones I am complaining about and I could easily claim to be exempt if I wanted to with asthma and anxiety not liking anything round my face, but I still wear a mask, please don’t make excuses for these people, it is the ones taking advantage I am complaining about, they should all have to prove why they are going round putting the rest of us at risk.
Very sad they feel they have to do this as if you’re not near Newport and need something urgently you can’t get it. Builders etc can still work and often use them. Why can’t they have service at the door like they did before so nobody goes into the shop? I feel people will go elsewhere which is a shame for a local business like them.
Well, they have click and collect and delivery.
they should be open – no excuses – pathetic.
Such a shame, you had a really good, safe system working in Ryde metering people in and out. So many of us prefer to support you as our local business rather than the huge outlets. You really should reconsider this decision.
They remain open to click and collect and delivery’s on the island. You can still purchase things online and the staff are more then willing to help via phones or email. This is to keep the public safe and the workers safe. Saying they should “reconsider this decision” is stupid! having too many people in the work place then going back to there families then going back into work can be dangerous for everyone. This decision they have made is the correct one.
Yes please reconsider – shanklin had the same one in one out system
Agree Hursts shops in Newport and Freshwater run like well oiled machines during the last 9+ months. I’m sure a lot of folk prefer to support local businesses, particularly one whose motto is ‘Try Hursts First’ – which is spot on!
Well i can honestly say the abuse the staff had to put up with from customers not wearing face masks and after asking people to wait until called in but they just walk in holding a hanky to they face saying this is a face covering. Ive seen this frist hand so please think before having a go this company has put staff 1st well done
Good for Hurst
Putting your staff first also keeping customers safe
I placed my order on line this morning
Nice to see a company putting safety before profits.
Hurst appear to have reacted to the rapidly spreading new covid strain, and acted accordingly.
Good for them.
Well done hurst! I have seen so many people getting aggressive with the staff if they have been asked to stick to rules. They have tried their hardest and gone above and beyond to help people out, especially the Ventnor branch. Why should they be verbally abused and put at risk by people that don’t seem to care! The majority of their customers lately seem to be on holiday or just popping into browse which makes it difficult for the staff to maintain social distancing! I’m glad the company is putting their staff before profits
Well done Hursts ,100% agree with actions that closures due to latest lockdown,We are in process to get a heater from Newport store, but thats fine and we will follow process of click/collect.But yes fully behind actions as this new strain of corona virus is so deadly, that we must all follow goverment instructions,So good on you Hurst, well done .
I am asthmatic with COPD and although not comfortable, I wear a mask. There are face visors as an alternative. My opinion is, if you can’t or won’t wear a face covering, don’t go in shops. As for Hursts I think what they’re doing is admirable, putting people before profit. If the ferry companies had had the same morals the island would not be in the dire position it is in right now.
Its a shame there isnt more sensible people like yourself. I fully understand there are people who can’t wear masks, but I draw the line where their behaviour contradicts any possible reason for not wearing them. You are right about the ferrys too, on a busy Red Funnel crossing just before xmas, an entire family were running about in my lounge and none of them had masks on. If they (and red funnel) were in any way concerned about theirs or anyone elses health, they would be at the very least have remained seated the entire journey rather than acting like covid doesn’t exist!
Exactly the sort of people I have been complaining about, but sadly people in the comments saying I shouldn’t speak out because not all illnesses are visible etc etc, as if i didn’t know that, being a sufferer myself, but I wear a mask and the people I have seen without are mainly the fit and able ones with the defiant attitude.
