The Red Funnel-owned Hythe Ferry has been placed into voluntary liquidation following unsuccessful attempts to secure a sustainable future for the historic service.
The Hythe Ferry has long served as an important transport link for the local community, with a history stretching back generations.
Over the past 18 months, the ferry’s owner has explored a range of options in a bid to bring the service back into operation. This included seeking funding opportunities, applying for grant support and inviting interest from potential investors or alternative operators.
However, despite these efforts, no viable proposals or interested parties came forward.
Following legal advice, the decision was taken to place the Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company into voluntary liquidation.
Taking to their website this morning (Thursday), a Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company spokesperson has said:
“We know how much the ferry means to the local community.
“This is a deeply disappointing outcome and not one that has been reached lightly.”
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported the ferry during this challenging time.”

Such a shame, another one bites the dust.
Such a shame, another one bites the dust
Not surprised.
Probably some smartass will make a planning application to turn the Pier into a solar farm for which no doubt there will be several million£’s of taxpayer funding.
Broken Britain proceeds apace.
