2 people spotted in the water at Shanklin has prompted a multi-agency emergency response including a helicopter and lifeboat tonight (Monday)
HM Coastguard was alerted to an incident unfolding on the Esplanade at Shanklin at around 21:45, prompting Rescue 175 Helicopter to be scrambled from Lee-on-Solent.
It was at this time that Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat was tasked to launch, with Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor also mobilised.
The situation has swiftly been brought under control with paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service now checking over the individuals.
2 ambulance crews are on scene with 1 of the casualties – a male – appearing to be wet through on his bottom half but otherwise uninjured.
Police are also on scene but the Coastguard Helicopter and independent lifeboat have been stood down.
It remains unclear as to why the duo were in the water in the first place.
UPDATE @ 22:55 – 1 casualty has been rushed to St Mary’s Hospital under blue lights for further assessment and treatment. The other is being checked over at the scene.
It has been confirmed the pair made their own way out of the water.
The incident is now drawing to a close.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

So paddling, not washed out to sea etc and all those resources. Why 2 ambulances when all the other resources are medical trained. People are seriously injured/in need etc yet have to wait hours for any medical help, something not right .
Ambulance only has driver + 1 so think they only take 1 injured, they won’t know how bad injuries are till they get to the scene, they were probably on route before life boat got to victims
Appreciate IE update, that one person has been taken hospital, so sorry maybe more to it, hope all are well this morning .
Well. That’s what we need. All that for two nobs.
And suddenly the armchair expert comes to our aid, how many of type’s of incident have you actually dealt with, NONE, i on the other hand have been involved in hundreds of incidents that always get criticised by the armchair critics that know nothing of the real facts.
Hats off to all those involved and keep up the great work you all do.
2 people in the water, in the dark, in winter..that needed 2 ambulances. Who knew, there were not more out there.
Will be interesting to find out why these two people were in the sea at 21:45
Must be a problem with the water, how did he get his bottom half wet
I hope if not to serious that those rescued consider giving something to those involved in their rescue.
Perhaps their dingy got a puncture.
The Green party manifesto to prevent the flood of illegals crossing the channel is to breed and release hundreds of hedgehogs and release them on the French coastline to puncture the craft before they get into deep water.
