This year’s Gatcombe & Chillerton Scarecrow Festival ran from Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th Jun and with good weather on most days came a steady flow of visitors throughout the area.
Festival organisers state that they have been running their, now, famous festival since 2010 when it won The Beautiful South GOLD Award.
Refreshments were available for visitors to enjoy with a cup of tea and a slice of cake at Aunt Sally’s Tea Room at the Community Hall or a pint of beer at the Gallybagger Inn – usually the Reading Room (Chillerton Club).
All the Scarecrows included showed a diverse range of creations to amuse, admire or even be scared by!
Several residents decided to depict US President Donald Trump and outside of Gatcombe Church Joseph in his coat of many colours was accompanied by real fleece sheep. Of special note was the wonderful display of uniform clad small children outside the school and pre-school, each one carefully made by a pupil with a little help from teachers and helpers.
1st prize went to Sarah and the Cook family with their ‘Birdfeeding at Hillside’. 2nd prize went to Paul and Kate Wells with the ‘King was in his Counting House’ and the 3rd prize winner was Sham Payne with his ‘Easy Riders’.
This festival raises money for local causes such as the upkeep of the village hall, equipment for the allotment group and Gatcombe Church.
