A fundraising appeal has been launched to support residents affected by a flat fire in Lake earlier this week (Tuesday), which claimed the lives of their dog, 2 guinea pigs and a chinchilla.
As previously reported by Island Echo, firefighters from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor were called to Sandown Road, between Flitcroft Gardens and Cemetery Road, to reports of a first-floor flat ‘well alight’.

The fire broke out in the top floor of the block, leading to the evacuation of residents as a precaution.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control, while positive pressure ventilation was deployed to clear smoke from the building.
Thankfully, no human injuries were reported, but it was later confirmed that a dog had died in the incident.
Andy and Chelsie, who are friends of the pet owners have since launched a GoFundMe to help ease the financial pressure on them following the fire, which they say also claimed the lives of 2 guinea pigs and a chinchilla.
A statement on the GoFundMe page, says:
“We are hoping to provide them with some financial support to help ease the pressure of what is currently a devastating time for them.”
So far, just over £300 has been raised.
Sandown Road was closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the incident, with traffic diverted via Green Lane and Whitecross Lane.

This was very sad news, but does no one have insurance anymore
in 2026!
Maybe they do maybe they dont but most insurance despite grand claims do not pay a penny piece until they have assessed, reassessed,talk to Fire forensics anything to get out of paying in advance,”man cannot live on good thoughts alone!.what was that viral saying????oh yes “be kinder”!;;
I do understand insurance companies are good
at taking ones money and when you make a claim
they suffer from shyitus!
Were they not insured?
My thoughts exactly, people don’t seem to
pay insurance thesedays, too busy spending their
money on Booze, Cigarettes, Vapes and Tattoos
and then expect others to foot their bills!
They are having a laugh!!
Be interested to see the cause of this fire, sure will not be human error. Unlikely cigerattes or vap batteries were the cause as these people seem to be on the bread line as could not afford insurance. Strange how even the poor dog could not have been saved if owners their dueing the outbreak. Must have took hold very fast. Hopefully island echo will have full report when its released.
