A flood warning has been issued for towns and villages on the Eastern Yar including Sandown, Brading, Bembridge, Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone.
The warning comes after more than half a month’s rain – some 70mm – was recorded in Knighton over the past 48 hours.
Extensive out of bank flooding throughout the Yar Valley has led to the Environment Agency issuing the warning, which comes less than 12 hours after another flood warning was issued for the Newport area.
Morton Common and Golf Links Road in Sandown are flooded this morning, with a warning that Fort Holiday Park and Sandown sewage works could flood as ditches struggle to drain to the main river.
The access track to Horringford will be flooded, restricting access and cycle tracks and footpaths across the Upper Yar Valley will be impassable.
From midday, the main road in Alverstone will flood near the main road bridge. Water will begin to surround property in Alverstone and Langbridge, where property flooding is possible.
Avenue Road in Sandown has been closed as a result of the flooding, with Morton Common barely passable. Motorists should divert via Yaverland.
Over the next few hours property flooding is possible at Nicholas Close in Brading.
The Environment Agency says it is operating the sluice at Bembridge to manage water levels across Brading marsh. However, the neap tide cycle will restrict the amount of water which can drain from the river for the next 4 days.
The Eastern Yar is expected to continue rising until tonight.
If you have it, install flood protection now. It is recommended you leave it in place until at least Friday.

Last night Wednesday16th) two properties and more were about to flood in Newport.
The contractors stated it would have wait until the morning; private contractors would be at the owner’s expense.
The Fire Brigade stated they could do nothing.
Island Roads stated they had not adopted the road yet and would not come out.
The flood line was automated and had no helpful information.
Sandbag collection point were empty.
THANK YOU to all the residents and their children in the surrounding area who came with wheelie bins and buckets and bailed water into a nearby stream to stop the properties from flooding.
Eventually contractors called in private companies after many calls for help.
What is this Island like!!!!!
