The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Isle of Wight coast ahead of the arrival of Storm Eunice.
Friday afternoon’s tide is expected to be higher than normal due to Storm Eunice, which will bring hurricane-force winds and 5m+ waves. The weather increases tide table values by 0.8 m.
A red weather warning is in force from 08:00-16:00 tomorrow, as first reported by Island Echo.
For 1 hour either side of high water, seafront roads, esplanades and car parks will flood. In Cowes, water will impact the High Street and Medina Road (floating bridge), whilst Sea Street in Newport is likely to be affected too. In East Cowes, seawater forced up through drains will impact roads at Albany Road, York Avenue and Castle Street.
The ferry terminal at Yarmouth will also flood.
Tide levels remain a little elevated on Saturday although any impacts are likely to be minor.
If you have it, please install flood protection at Medina Road (Cowes) Well Road (East Cowes) and Bridge Road (Yarmouth), 1 hour before high tide. We will update or remove this message by 18:00 on 18/02/2022.
The force of Mother Nature. It’s a bit scary. Nobody should go out unless they absolutely have to. Stay safe.
That salt water is going to do that land rover any good
Oh, look at me, I can sail through this as I have a land rover – wot a plonker ..
“in East Cowes sea water forced up through the drains will flood the roads” – how? The drains are permanently blocked with rubbish which is why water cannot drain away. That is what causes the flooding. The drains (and the council who don’t clear them) are a disgrace.
I dont think a 10″pipe can ever cope with20 million gallons of sea water rushing in ,in minutes ,….there are 4 land drains in albany road ….our front gardens (facing the sea) was 2ft deep…..a blocked drain is not the cause…mkay…
