A flood alert for the Isle of Wight coast has been issued by the Environment Agency this evening (Saturday) – with East Cowes and Cowes expected to take the brunt.
Sunday afternoon’s tide (12:05) is expected to be higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong South Westerly Force 6 winds and large waves. The weather increases tide table values by 0.33m – known as a Storm Surge.
In Cowes, the forecast tide is 4.90 metres Chart Datum (2.31 mAOD). For 1 hour either side of high water spray overtopping of sea defences will flood seafront roads, esplanades, car parks and ferry terminals. Water will be high up slipways in Cowes affecting Medina Road and the floating bridge.
In East Cowes, sea water forced up through drains will flood into the road at Albany Road, York Avenue and Castle Street. As a precautionary measure, flood protection should be installed near the floating bridge and Well Road.
Islanders are warned that tides between now and Tuesday are high enough to cause minor impacts at each high water.
Sandbags have been made available at Newport Quay, St Mary’s Road car park in Cowes and Well Road in East Cowes. They are available for homes and businesses alike that may be at risk.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds and storm surges has been issued by the IW Met Service, as previously reported by Island Echo.
What you should consider doing now
- Monitor local water levels and weather conditions
- Get ready to act on your flood plan if you have one
- Move cars or other vehicles to higher ground, if it is safe to do so
- Check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies
- Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. 30cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet
- Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it
