Several fire crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at a property on Lushington Hill this afternoon (Saturday) following reports of a vehicle striking a gas main.
1 pump and the Rescue Tender from Newport are on scene, alongside a further crew from Ryde and a Fire Officer.
The teams were called to the residential address at just after 15:10.
Firefighters are focusing their attentions on the front lawn of the property, and are using an environmental pack to stem the flow of gas which is escaping from the main.
Traffic is being directed through the stretch of road affected by the incident, but is slow both in the Newport and Wootton directions.
A strong smell of gas is present in the area, with engineers from SGN also arriving on scene.
UPDATE @ 15:50 – Following an initial assessment by firefighters alongside engineers from SGN, and the deployment of an environment pack to stem the flow, the majority of resources at the scene are beginning to stand down – including an Ambulance Service Officer who has attended in the last few minutes as a precautionary measure.
Both the Rescue Tender and an appliance from Ryde are returning to station.
Traffic is still being managed by the remaining crew from Newport as gas engineers continue to assess the scene.
UPDATE @ 16:30 – The last remaining fire crew from Newport has now stood down from the incident.
SGN engineers continue to investigate the issue, which is believed to have stemmed from a gas main being struck by a vehicle.
Temporary signs have been erected warning motorists and pedestrians not to smoke in the vicinity of the scene.
