The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is responding to reports of a fire at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport this morning (Tuesday).
According to control, it has been confirmed that a fire has broken out in a side room on one of the wards.
Appliances from Newport, Cowes and Ryde are responding to the emergency, including an aerial ladder platform which is holding at a nearby strategic point.
Island Echo is told that the fire has already been extinguished by quick-thinking NHS staff, but further checks are being carried out.
The alarm was raised at 08:29.
UPDATE @ 09:03 – Fire crews are now being stood down from the incident, although Newport’s wholetime crew remain on scene clearing smoke from the building using positive pressure ventilation.
It has been confirmed that the fire broke out on Osborne Ward – part of the Trust’s mental health service.
The cause is unknown at this time, but the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has been approached for a statement.
UPDATE @ 11:06 – It has been confirmed that 4 individuals have been checked over as a precautionary measure.
Staff and patients have been allowed to return to the building.

How frightening at this time. Well done staff and fire brigade.
Given the purpose of the ward, there has been a failure to predict how the inevitable may happen here. I am assuming it wasn`t an accident in saying that. ANY opportunity and this will occur.
People like you mate need educating about mental health. Not all people that have mental health are criminally insane.
I can’t stand presumptuous half Whits. There is a mental health condition called narcissistic personality disorder. I ASSUME YOU MAY SUFFER WITH THIS!!
Damn idiot.
Pyro…………………………………………?
Why don’t you get back in your Bucket!!
Well, apparently, I have NPD.
I was always taught to “engage brain before opening mouth”.
Isn’t that the second one this week?
Oddly to me, the Government is throwing ever more cash to this problem, despite treatment of other ailments growing even longer, causing ironically, even more deep stress, anxiety, worry and pain for the elderly or sick.
I guess it is easier, and cheaper to pick up a phone than a scalpel for the NHS now.
This cash should be given to the Samaritains and pay NHS staff to treat all the long backlog of patients who can’t be ‘helped’ with mere half hearted words.
Well done to all
