Another empty Newport shop could become a residential property.
The empty former Swinton Insurance offices, occupying the ground floor of the Grade II listed building, on the lower part of Newport High Street, is the subject of a planning application to be turned into a 1 bedroom-flat.
The rest of the building, which according to the owner has been empty for 3 years, has already been given permission to be transformed into 4 flats.
In planning documents, the applicant, Kiran Sesetti, of Arks Estates, said for a number of years no interest had been shown in the retail premises, which is opposite the British Heart Foundation charity shop and next to Wight Grill House.
With the current economic climate and decline in the high street, Mr Sesetti thinks it is highly unlikely any interest will be shown in the future, especially as the shop is not on the main commercial route in Newport.
If permission is granted, it would be the second property in a row of 3 to be turned into residential units, with approval given in August this year to incorporate the former Medical Eye Centre shop, at 146, into the existing dwelling.
Sandwiched between the 2, at 145, is Jaks Hair and Beauty, but permission was given in February to turn the rest of that building into flats.
To keep ‘a semi-shop feel’, Mr Sesetti is proposing putting an advertising board on the front of the shop.

Our towns are being ruined by masse building as in Ryde, and our towns will lose their character and shops and just end up flats.
So with more people, and far less jobs this Island’s crime rate will rocket, making the living standard of all far far lower than we have ever known here.
Vote this council out, for they only care about fiscal gain, not quality of life for those who pay their over inflated wages, pensions and expenses.
I thought you would be pleased. More brown field sites used for housing and conversion of empty buildings will mean less of the housing you hate.
Additional not ‘instead of’
Only those, like you, with vested interests would ever be pleased to see more people, more cars and more loss of our Island’s history.
RYDE THEATRE WOUL D MAKE AN IDEAL PLACE TO TURN INTO FLATS I KNOW IT MAKES ME MAD TO SEE THAT BUILDING JUST GOING TO WASTE.
Why not, the high Street has died, better to make use of the building rather than have another eyesore left empty, plus one less new flat will need to be built!
The High Street hasn’t died – it was killed of by Tory tossers. Their disastrous policies continued to hammer small businesses until the final straw was added. But hey, at least mega-conglomerates like Amazon who pay no tax, have nice cosy relations with Gov & Co. escaped unharmed.
The reason this is happening, all over the world I might add, is it’s part of the agenda 2030,great reset plan. This will continue to happen until only big corporations are left ,no high street, you will have to buy off of them at their prices .
IF the third world have not bred us ALL into starvation by then. Already have the food parcels keeping some of us alive now. Coincidence?
agenda 2030 points 28 and 29
28. We commit to making fundamental changes in the way that our societies produce and consume goods and services. Governments, international organizations, the business sector and other non-state actors and individuals must contribute to changing unsustainable consumption and production patterns, including through the mobilization, from all sources, of financial and technical assistance to strengthen developing countries’ scientific, technological and innovative capacities to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production. We encourage the implementation of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production. All countries take action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking into account the development and capabilities of developing countries.
29. We recognize the positive contribution of migrants for inclusive growth and sustainable development. We also recognize that international migration is a multi-dimensional reality of major relevance for the development of countries of origin, transit and destination, which requires coherent and comprehensive responses. We will cooperate internationally to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration involving full respect for human rights and the humane treatment of migrants regardless of migration status, of refugees and of displaced persons. Such cooperation should also strengthen the resilience of communities hosting refugees, particularly in developing countries. We underline the right of migrants to return to their country of citizenship, and recall that States must ensure that their returning nationals are duly received.
Finally someone that has taken the time to read and understand the agenda 2030. Thank you. I’m fed up with people saying I’m just spreading conspiracy. This is fact people.
