An East Cowes man who stole more than £1,000 worth of goods from various shops in Newport is to be sentenced in April.
Ross Smith, 46, of Falcon Road in East Cowes, admitted 3x theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday 14th January).
Prosecutor Munayah Hassan told the court that on 27th September last year, Smith entered Sports Direct on South Street in Newport and picked up 6x polo shirts to the value of £390 and then left the store without paying.
Just a week later, on 4th October, Smith entered Holland & Barrett on High Street in Newport and took 3x tubs of protein powder, again making no attempt to pay for the goods.
Finally, on 9th October, again at Sports Direct, Smith picked up 6x Nike jackets to the value of £539.94 and left the store without paying for them.
None of the stolen goods, worth £1,049.94 in total, were ever recovered.
Defending Smith, Oscar Vincent told the court that his client had been free of offending for some 4 years before this incident and that at the time he was experiencing substance misuse issues.
The court heard how the 46-year-old had a total of 36 convictions for 95 offences, with 53 of those offences being for theft of kindred matters.
Magistrates adjourned the case until 11th April when a pre-sentence report will be available to the sentencing bench.
Smith has been granted conditional bail until that time.
