43-year-old Anthony Martin has been imprisoned for a total of 6 years for a series of thefts, including stealing £3,000 from Shanklin Beach Hotel and gold chains from an Isle of Wight jeweller.
Martin, now of Beach Road in Southsea but formerly from the Island, appeared at Southampton Crown Court earlier this week where he was sentenced for a string of offences including 4x possession of a bladed article, 2x robbery, 2x attempted robbery, 2x theft from a shop, 2x assaulting an emergency worker and 1x theft by employee.
It was on 1st May last year that Martin – a self-confessed drug addict – helped himself to £3,000 cash from the safe of the Shanklin Beach Hotel, where he worked.
Then, exactly a month later, Martin entered Isle of Wight Jewellers on Regent Street, Shanklin and asked to see various items. Once the attendant had put them on the counter, Martin grabbed them and ran out of the store. He made good his escape on a pushbike having stolen around £3,000 worth of gold chains.
Martin had been due to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 4th July for the hotel cash theft, but he failed to show and a warrant was issued for his arrest. It turns out he had fled to the mainland.
He was arrested in Hampshire shortly after and was put before Portsmouth Magistrates Court, where he admitted his guilt. He was given bail.
Southampton Crown Court heard this week that Martin went on to commit a number of other offences on the mainland, including after being given bail following his court appearance in July.
Taking into account the offences committed and Anthony Martin’s hefty previous convictions, Judge Nicholas Rowland sentenced the 43-year-old to 6 years behind bars.

Gosh a jail sentence, wonders will never cease.
Isle of shite strikes again, or is it the shite Isle? same difference either way!
Some people, like this piece of scum, need putting down.
I recommend you first terry baby
Fear makes people go beyond what is humanitarian. Eye for an eye maybe I could get behind that but to just thin him out isn’t that murder? Like if someone’s a rapist chop his Rodger off and make him suffer that way as a dead man can’t feel a beating, but a thief shouldn’t be put down that’s just plain murder and it’s only driven by fear. I wan’t intellectual and productive suggestions not some narcissistic self righteous BS where you want everyone to be like robots to serve how you think the narrative should be. Sure I want a peaceful world but not in the fashion how you and many others wish to attain peace. You just as much a thug as the person you want to kill
My arguement is not to put him down, althought the crime figures would be better for it, why was he ever given bail after his first offence, if you cost all the extra hours that the police had to put in to investigate the subsquent crime spree and searching for him when he failed to turn up at court, costs that we pay for..There is an ill advised presumption of granting which bail has to be looked at agian becaus the courts favour the criminal and not the victims.Additionally if you fail to turn up at court there should be a mandatory 12 month prison sentence on top of anything else you may get.
That’s a first somebody actually getting jailed for what they done !!!!!
Likely the stormy weather has prevented the UK being deluged with dingy arrivals for a few months, allowing a few spaces to fill with ‘our own’ for a short while.
