The young driver of a car that careered into the path of an oncoming pick up truck near Ventnor is lucky to be alive, escaping this afternoon’s horror crash with a serious arm injury.
Emergency services – including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance – were mobilised to Whitwell Road, between Whitwell and Ventnor, at just before 15:30 this afternoon (Friday), as first reported by Island Echo.
Police, fire and ambulance crews arrived to find a significant crash between a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Ranger, noting substantial damage to the front end of the small hatchback.
The male driver of the Fiesta was extricated from the car by fire crews from Shanklin and Newport and, after being checked over by flying medics, was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land for treatment to an arm injury.
The extent of the damage was such that Police said at the scene that if the vehicle had been carrying a passenger, then it is likely they would have lost their life in the smash.
Island Echo is told that a relation of the driver was due to be travelling in the same car but, by fate, took alternative plans.
The driver of the Ranger escaped any notable injury.
Whitwell Road has now re-opened in both directions following initial on scene investigations and recovery of the vehicles involved.
Police are probing whether speed was a factor in the crash, with the Fiesta that was travelling away from Ventnor appearing to go wide on a right hand bend – known locally as Warbens Bend – before crossing over into the path of the pick up truck.

someone going to fast were they???
Crumbs that car looks awful. It’s lucky no one died in my opinion
Due to IDIOT drivers who drive at speed along this Road
it is very UNSAFE
IW Council need to make Roads like this safe by placing
speed humps in sections along this Road.
Drivers cannot be trusted to stick to the speed limit
so the authorities need to step in
(IW Council have a duty of care)
Everyday motorists speeds along this Road, it is
frightening.
I agree
Police probing wheather speed was a factor? So they can work that out by the state of the vehacle then?
Thank goodness for your insightful opinion
I see the comment about speeding as disappeared.
Some rain, wet leaves, mud from the tractors, nice bend, speed and you got the perfect recipe for disaster.
