A serious crash on the main Ventnor to Whitwell Road has resulted in a large emergency service response this afternoon (Friday), including from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on scene at Whitwell Road, between Watcombe Bottom and the junction with St Lawrence Shute, where a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Ranger pick up truck have collided.
The air ambulance is also inbound from Andover.
The collision occurred shortly before 15:30.
Whitwell Road is closed in both directions meaning the only access in and out of Ventnor is via Wroxall.
UPDATE @ 16:12 – The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has touched down in a field beside the crash scene, with medics now tending to the male driver of the Fiesta – who has been extricated by firefighters.
His injuries are thought to be serious but not life-threatening.
The driver of the Ford Ranger has escaped any significant injury.
UPDATE @ 16:30 – The decision has been made to convey the driver to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance, indicating his injuries are not life threatening.
The air ambulance has now stood down from the incident as a result.
Whitwell Road is expected to remain closed for the next couple of hours whilst investigation work is undertaken and the scene cleared.
UPDATE @ 17:23 – Recovery of both vehicles is underway with the road expected to reopen within the hour.
Police have completed initial on scene investigations, probing whether speed was a factor in the crash.
UPDATE @ 20:10 – The driver is lucky to have escaped with his life, with new photographs revealing the extent of the horror smash.
