The driver of a Nissan Micra that fled the scene of a crash on The Downs at Ashey last night (Tuesday) managed to evade arrest, Police have confirmed.
As first reported by Island Echo, Police were called to Ashey Road at 20:40 to reports that a car had crashed into an embankment and the driver had run away.
A local dog unit was deployed at the scene in a bid to track the suspect down in the dark, but the efforts proved fruitless. It’s thought the suspect ran across open fields towards Brading Down Road before disappearing.
The road was closed for a time but re-opened ahead of the recovery of the crashed Micra.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 8.40pm last night to Ashey Road in Ryde following reports of a road traffic collision involving a Nissan Micra.
“The driver of the Micra left the scene and officers searched for him using the police dog unit but he was not found”.
Enquiries continue and anyone with information is asked to report it to Police on 101, quoting 44230072863.

Driver gets in home,, goes to bed. wakes up in the morning and claims car stolen. Gets away with drunk driving. Oldest trick in the book.
You would hope they would get to the drivers house before they either returned or managed to fall asleep!!!
Well the dog would anyway
Is it not possible for the Police to search up the owner through the reg plates? At least hold them accountable?
Is a absolute joke if you think about it…
Would be handy if we could have freedom of information for investigations (insurance company driver details etc). Especially if the car was not reported stolen, would make for an easy case against the owner. Also, if our fines actually covered the costs that would be good (i.e. in Switzerland if you knock down a lamp post, you have to pay for all the replacement costs and your liscence gets taken away at the scene of the crash).
Police already have the details in all Police cars.
Assuming of course it has all the correct registration documents, Road tax, Insurance etc, that make it legal to be on the road.
Also try fingerprints, might take a little longer but the livelihood they are already on the criminal record list.
Must have been a medical episode…
Defo, show compassion must have been a fugue state occuring as a response to stress associated with cost of living crisis
Their Doctor told them to take up jogging!
Medical cannabis episode is more like it.
But surely the police know who the car belongs to? I mean, seriously, if you’re going to steal a car, why would you steal a Nissan Micra? No offence to Micra owners, but I think you know what I mean.
Police don’t go on a manhunt with dogs just because someone crashes a car. Or do they? Must have been a slow night.
