Drifting inflatables sparked a response from HM Coastguard and Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat this afternoon (Friday).
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre was alerted to the 2 inflatables drifting a concerning distance away from the shoreline via 999 call, with operators quickly issuing a launch request to the volunteer lifeboat and its crew at 16:03.
The lifeboat made quick progress along the shoreline and located the inflatables, before intercepting them and bringing them ashore in front of crowds of beachgoers.
We’re reminded to always report anyone in distress at sea to the Coastguard by calling 999.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
