Former military man Kenneth ‘Mike’ Creed, a resident at Vecta House nursing home in Newport, has had his dream to be airborne again made a reality.
A flying enthusiast his entire life, Mike grew up around planes and served as a proud member of the Royal Air Force.
Mike was born in Aldershot in 1944. As a young boy he would go to Farnbourgh Air Show every year with his dad and Uncle Les, who would fly a Tiger Moth at the show. His dad worked as an inspector checking that the planes were fit to fly and his Uncle Les was a Lancaster pilot, so flying is in his blood.
At 14, Mike joined the ATC where he got his gliders licence. Later he joined the RAF and was posted to Newmarket where he did work in Telecommunications as a decoder. Mike loved being around planes every day, flying has always been his passion.
Tanya Everson, Head of Activities at Vecta House, found out about Mike’s love for planes during activities sessions at the home. Mike loves to reminisce about his time in the RAF.
Tanya had an idea to contact Sandown Airport as to whether it would be possible to arrange a flight for Mike. Dan Subhani and his team were only too happy to help!
Speaking about his surprise, Mike said:
“I am on the verge of tears. It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about me that they helped me to live out my dream. It means the world to me, I had such an amazing afternoon enjoying the beautiful views of the Isle Of Wight”.
