Hours of torrential rainfall has caused flooding on the Island’s roads, leading to dangerous driving conditions for motorists.
Numerous roads are now underwater – too many to list – with a significant road closure in place at Avenue Road, Sandown.
A Citroen Xsara Picasso has conked out at Binstead where several inches of water has spread across the carriageway on the main Ryde to Wootton road.
At Downend, a car has had to be recovered by the RAC after a lorry swamped the Ford Focus at Lynnbottom, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Many other roads have water run off from the fields and puddles forming, including heading into Havenstreet from Binstead.
Residential properties are taking a battering too. In Newport, residents at Buttercup Glade are using wheelie bins to move flood water away from properties.
Heasley Cottages at Shepherds Lane in Arreton have flooded for the 2nd time in just 3 months.

Love the term ‘conked out’ not heard that for years.
As for buttercup glade, it conjures up a vision which no doubt could be a liable case under the ‘trades description act’
Tarmac it all eh
Welcome to climate change. And it’s going to get worse.
Yes we’ve never had bad weather before in 4.5 billion years of the earth.
What about the Cowes boxing day floods of 1902.
I think the run off from too much island development is the problem.
Sunny next few days, don’t tell IW Council they will re-introduce the Hosepipe ban
Our council are looking to pass permission to build 2houses at Brightstone on a water meadow. Imagine it’ll add to the flooding issue.
Surely a bad move, or will it be down as global warming.
Brighstone.
No sign of Island Roads or the Police to help manage the traffic through these floods … what were those recent cost increases for again ??
Pensions, rainbow artwork and speed cameras.
And ensuring no blame is ever given for anything that doesn’t originate from GB, despite it often being so.
Clowncil or Island Roads should have cleared & cleaned drains well ahead of this torrential rain
Why are the Council STILL not contacting the farmers who own fields next to public roads and requesting they dig ditches to try and stop the water overspill from fields onto the roads?
Farmers did this years ago, it was called Ditching. This problem certainly needs to be addressed and quick. Predictions are, winters are going to be much wetter so ditching and drains need to be put onto the agenda for urgent attention. Perhaps the new CEO at County Hall could personally oversee these issues? Earn your salary.
Wher I used to live before my days on the island we had and still have a parish lengthsman whose job was to maintain the ditches and generally look after the highway, asking the farmers to do the councils job is nonsense.. This is why we pay a huge amount of council tax ,
