Coastal erosion in Bembridge has led to the closure of a popular footpath that runs between Whitecliff Bay and Forelands. In recent weeks, the BB10 coastal path has deteriorated to the point where it is now unsafe, forcing the Isle of Wight Council to act. The section of coastline running between Bembridge towards Culver Down has seen numerous footpath closures in recent years, but the current situation has resulted in a significantly greater area being closed to the public. It has been confirmed that the BB10 has been closed by the Rights of Way team between Forelands Field Road to the BB16 at Whitecliff Bay, with BB14 (Howgate Road) and BB15 (Jenny Street Lane) also closed to stop members of the public from walking down to BB10.

Whilst a valid reason to close let’s hope the closure is not used as an excuse to not bother to ever reopen these scenic public footpaths.
Compulsory purchase of land to reinstate such routes should be a given with few exceptions.
Although it suits the council to close such relieving them of costly maintenance I am sure that our wonderful Parish Council workers would be willing and more than able to help reinstate these pathways as they have in the past.
Well they won’t re open it ..you know that..
I agree about the need for compulsory purchase of neighbouring land, but land owners have the right of appeal and the whole thing gets kicked into the long grass and lawyers get rich at the council’s expense.
Why do they need to close it? Surely you just walk slightly further inland, which you can see by the trodden grass in the photo that people have already been doing?
Or do they think that some idiot will blindly follow the route of the collapsed path and fall down the slope?
Seems very similar to part of the path on the Yaverland to Culver footpath. But they haven’t closed that, and it’s a steeper fall.
This country is now full of scammers, just waiting to ‘sue’ , all aided and abetted by ‘no win-no fee firms’; so, IF you were the one liable to be sued for hundreds of thousands or more, what would YOU then do? Close it, or take that risk?
It a sensible world, the fence should be just moved inland a few yards where the damaged section is by our local or main Council. But now a long, costly battle will likely ensure between landowners.
It should be as someone said a case of instant compulsory purchase for a low price, as the newly acquired land will only be their briefly whether the current landowner has it, OR the council.
New laws need to be made to acquire land in these times, to save fuss, delay and loss of pleasure.
Because of the risk of litigation should a further collapse occur. Because some people are idiots and refuse to accept that if it’s collapsed once it increases the chances of it happening again.
Unfortunately there are too many numpties in this molly coddled world that would blindly follow that path. The current generation are just too soft and many without any common sense….

Hospitals, therefore not putting pressure on

Part of the British Isles were falling into the sea long before the Industrial Revolution. Been to Dunwich in Suffolk ?
Lets hope the sea comes up and washes away Away Resorts Holiday Park, then we can have quiet and nature back to Hillway Road Bembridge.
