For the first time the Island will host competitive cycle races on the speedway track at Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde.
The event is being organized in conjunction with Sustrans and the new Isle of Wight Cycling Club and will take place every Tuesday evening at 16:30. Each event will start with a half hour kids coaching session, open to all ages, where children can come and ride their bikes on the totally car-free enclosed track to build their confidence. Then at 17:00 they have the chance to put their skills and legs to the test and race each other around the track. Adults will then have the opportunity to race in heats until a champion for the evening is crowned!
Barry Bishop, Chairman at Smallbrook said:
“This initiative offers a fantastic opportunity for children, adults and families to make use of the safe environment at Smallbrook to practise their cycling and racing skills on a dedicated track.
“Smallbrook was only too pleased to participate in the excellent idea that promotes physical fitness, team work and community and is the start of many new and exciting opportunities to participate in activity at Smallbrook.
“We would like to wish everyone taking part in the weekly events a great time and we look forward to watching the racers progress.”
These events are designed to encourage and promote cycling and community development on the Island and it is hoped friends and family will head along to enjoy and support them.
Faye Faber, Sustrans schools officer said:
“These events will encourage children and adults to find a safe and fun way to build their confidence on bikes as well as having the chance to meet other people in the community who have the same interests”.
Homemade cakes and refreshments will be available.
