Despite the anticipated poor weather, the sun shone down on the East Wight today (Saturday) for the annual Bembridge RNLI open day, attracting strong visitor numbers to the lifeboat station.
As well as learning about sea safety, the history of the lifeboat station and enjoying tea and cake, visitors of all ages were able to witness the launch of the Tamar-class All Weather Lifeboat ahead of a demonstration with the smaller D-class inshore lifeboat.
In the boathouse children were challenged to ‘throw the line’ to rescue teddy and visitors were able to see the orange, blue and white lifeboat out of the water and poised for launch at a moment’s notice.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were on hand at the shore providing information about the work they do, which is often carried out alongside the RNLI.
Former coxswain of Bembridge Lifeboat, Martin Woodward MBE was signing copies of his book ‘Bembridge Lifeboat Station – A Village Commitment’.
