Adverse weather conditions have led to the suspension of some cross-Solent services this morning (Thursday).
Gusts reached 84mph overnight and gusts of 78.2 mph are still being recorded at the Needles National Coastwatch station this morning.
Hovertravel has announced that its service between Ryde and Southsea is currently grounded as a result of the weather conditions on the Solent. The service failed to run yesterday afternoon and evening after the wind conditions changed at lunchtime. An update is due at 08:00.
Red Funnel’s hi-speed Red Jet Service is also suspended at this moment in time but is expected to run later on.
Wightlink’s ferry services are running to timetable, as is Red Funnel’s vehicle ferry service from East Cowes.
With strong winds still battering the Needles, hardy walkers are advised not to approach the rocket site or Scratchells Bay viewpoint until the wind abates.
Homes and businesses in central parts of the Island are without power after supply was lost during the early hours. 22 postcode areas in PO30 1, PO30 3, PO30 4 and PO30 5 are affected.
UPDATE @ 15:21 – Hovertravel services will resume at 16:15 from Ryde and 16:30 from Southsea.

Perhaps it would be more helpful to report the mean and highest wind speeds recorded at the Bramblenet buoy in the Solent (currently F7, highest gust just over 50 knots) rather than the more local, dramatic and specific wind acceleration effects recorded at The Needles?
Got nothing sensible to say.. shut up
You should practice what you preach!!!
Perhaps they should buy better ships that can handle rougher water’s…The Solent isn’t exactly the bay of biscay….
The mentality is buy cheep and hope for the best, but the big ships still doc in Southampton, and they’ve travelled from all four corners of the world…
truth – it is better to be though of as stupid, rather than speak and remove all doubt.
please show us where a ship of that size, can berth at ryde or fishbourne?
secondly – those big ships, have large tugs assisting berthing at all times.
have you actually been on the solent in rough weather – because I have and unless you are in a ship of signficant size, you will be all over the place.
Not that big, use your imagination.
then why reference them – perhaps your imagination isn’t up to scratch or able to comprehend reality
What’s wrong with you far lefties? You have absolutely no sense of humour, and anyone dare disagree with you, your slamming out patronising insults..
Very Sad…
