A crew member with a dislocated shoulder has been evacuated from an oil tanker at anchor off the Isle of Wight by Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat tonight (Sunday).
Bembridge’s All Weather Lifeboat launched at 18:40 following a request from Solent Coastguard to medivac an injured individual with a dislocated shoulder from the bulk crude oil tanker ‘Songa Jade’, which was anchored in St Helens Roads.
It did not take long for the volunteer lifeboat crew to reach the tanker, however, as the only means of disembarking the casualty was via a boarding ladder, it took some time to rig up a block & tackle to allow the safe transfer of the casualty to the Tamar-class ‘Alfred Albert Williams’.
Once onboard, at around 19:35, the lifeboat headed to Portsmouth Camber to await the arrival of South Central Ambulance Service. After a considerable wait, it was agreed that they could leave the casualty with Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and return to Bembridge.
Departing the Camber at 20:40, the Alfred Albert Williams was back at the boathouse at Lane End at 21:00.
