Ed Hatt broke Cowes Sports’ all-time goalkeeping appearance record on Tuesday night, making his 573rd appearance for the Yachtsmen.
The landmark came in the Velocity Wessex League Cup defeat to AFC Stoneham, with the long-serving stopper overtaking the previous record that had stood for many years.
Before the game, Hatt was presented with a special commemorative shirt and plaque by his father, Kev, in recognition of his achievement.
Hatt, who made his debut as an 18-year-old, has gone on to become one of the most consistent figures at Westwood Park, playing a key role in cup successes, promotion to the Wessex League and representing the Isle of Wight at Island Games level.
Manager Mark Woodhouse said:
“A special night. Ed breaks the appearance record that has stood for such a long time.
His dedication and attitude to continue to improve puts him apart from other players. We pride ourselves at Cowes on fostering that attitude and Ed epitomises this.
Please show your appreciation for a true Cowes legend.”
Director of football Ian Potts added:
“I was assistant manager when Ed made his debut in a FA Vase game in Bristol at the age of 18 – he was man of the match that day.
I knew from that day he was going to be a special goalkeeper.
He’s gone on to break the Cowes Sports all-time goalkeepers appearance record with 573 games. That’s a massive achievement.
He has won multiple Gold Cups, Wessex League promotion and represented the Isle of Wight as number 1 goalkeeper at several Island Games, even winning a medal.
It’s been a pleasure to watch most of those games and still be here to see him break the record.
He’s a brilliant all-round goalkeeper. As a person he’s loyal, funny, committed and a top lad.
He is a Cowes legend and I love him to bits. Here’s to many more.”
