A ‘high quality’ shepherd’s hut with an outdoor kitchen, sauna and mini-meadow will be installed at alpaca and llama farm in the West Wight.
The Isle of Wight Council granted N. and M. Payne planning permission to site the 1-bedroom structure, ‘suited to singles and couples on short breaks’, at West Wight Alpacas between Wellow and Thorley.
Approved plans will give the farm and tourist destination an alternative revenue stream with greater stability and less reliance on day-to-day weather, according to a statement from Planning and Development Hub.
Two residents opposed the proposal, however, with disquiet voiced over overdevelopment and noise.
Sandy Oliver said:
“There will be a noise factor to consider when the hut is operational. If this is permitted to be built it opens the floodgates for more shepherd’s huts being erected.
“This would make the area into a campsite which is entirely out of keeping with the quiet peaceful village of Wellow. It should be refused.”
Shalfleet Parish Council did not object to application 25/01314/FUL.
Isle of Wight Council planners said in their decision report:
“Officers are satisfied that the development would not result in overdevelopment of the site or an adverse visual impact to the rural character of the area.
“The proposals would not result in an adverse level of noise impact to neighbouring property occupiers.”
A total of 7 conditions were included in the consent, for the purposes of planning policy and legal compliance, ensuring biodiversity net gain, suitable drainage and that the accommodation is used only for a holiday function, environmental protection and highway safety.

High quality thats a joke in itself,is that because if they advertise it as high quality they can charge £300 a night for it?
then again, some pilchard will pay it .
I am surprised people pay ridiculous fees,
it proves that Labour know many people have loads
of money to waste, hence tax increases.
Goody, I love a shepherd’s hut, so long as it has a king size bed, has enough room for comfortable seating and something to keep the flies out.
A shepherd’s hut is high quality & contrary to Ohlins 46 comment, is, in and of itself high quality. It is rural in appearance & will blend in.
I had one of these on a field that I owned & flies were a problem.
