The winner of a new poster competition will see their artwork displayed on buses and trains across the Isle of Wight. Launched earlier this week by the Isle of Wight Council in partnership with Southern Vectis and the Isle of Wight Community Rail Partnership, the competition challenges young people to design a poster that encourages good behaviour on public transport or at the roadside.
Poster competition categories
Category 1: Behave well on public transport
- Avoid excessive noise (such as phones on speaker, or being noisy).
- Don’t be anti-social.
- Take your litter with you and put it in a bin.
- Don’t disrupt or disturb other passengers.
Category 2: Stay smart on the roadside
- Stay off your phone.
- Don’t mess around with friends when you cross the road.
- Remove earbuds and headphones to focus when you cross the road.
- Cross at the lights.
Lewis Campbell, the council’s road safety officer, said:
“We really want to see some inspiring designs that will make people stop and think about good behaviour either on public transport or at the roadside. “This is about helping to make everyone’s journey on public transport more peaceful and enjoyable, as well as encouraging road safety. “The winner will see their artwork displayed on buses and trains, where it will be seen by thousands of people! This is your opportunity to design a campaign that will really make a difference.”
The competition is open to all secondary, sixth form and college students on the Island. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 30th April and full details can be found on the council’s webpage.

Hope this will make a difference but have my doubts that anyone littering, swearing and causing problems on buses will be swayed to stop by a poster campaign. I sincerely hope I’m wrong.
Have you been drinking Phil? You know that drink always ends up with you littering, swearing, and causing problems on buses (or driving pissed of course).
Surely they can give the winners a free bus pass for the year. Saves them a packet on design consultants.
Does anyone seriously believe that a poster on a bus will have any effect on anti-social behaviour?
It’s one of the reasons many of us avoid using public transport if we can. All too often a journey is ruined by drunks, anti-social people shouting into their phones or playing music through the speaker, swearing etc.
Back in the old days (showing my age here!) there used to be a conductor going around the bus collecting fares who might tell people to calm down, or even an inspector at times too. But, these days, I assume the driver is blissfully unaware of what’s going on, mostly on the upper decks.
Maybe a poster with the heading: “If you misbehave on buses, this is what others really want to do to you”, with a picture of some kids hanging from a gallows.
Apparently in Japan, its the kids that clean the schools, some behaviour such as littering is symptomatic of just being a chav.
Use the bus for its intended purpose, and shut your mouth…..Respect needs to start at primary school, posters won’t change anything…
Drink Driving Kills would be the perfect advert
How about installing such posters on the ferries as well? What with people talking very loud on their mobiles ( so everyone can hear their business) and others listening to loud music, it is not very comfortable on crossings these days.
When do the police attend for anti social behaviour from bus or train users? Never. But they are there like a shot when it comes to the ferries
Using graffiti to stop graffiti. That’s a good one.
