Network Rail has submitted new plans for a replacement footbridge at Brading Train Station, which would see the existing 160-year-old bridge removed.
Listed Building Consent is being sought from the Isle of Wight Council in relation to a proposed replacement footbridge in the historic town.
It was just over 2 years ago that Network Rail initially received Listed Building Consent for the renewal of the footbridge, but the scheme didn’t go ahead as it became apparent the design needed alternating to ensure that the bridge would be strong enough.
Now, a number of changes such as additional cross bracing underneath the staircases and reinforcement of the foundations have been implemented into the plans, with consent once again being sought from the local authority.
A temporary footbridge at Brading Train Station was first erected in March 2021 and remains in situ, but it was only ever meant to be in place for 6 months. Back in December permission was sought to retain it for another 12 months, taking us to the end of 2023.
Network Rail has given written assurances that they do in fact believe that works will be completed within 12 months from December 2022.
A spokesperson for the railway company has previously told Island Echo:
“When the station was built in the 1860s, it was constructed to the standards of the time. The platforms were basic walls, with the middle sections filled in with whatever material was to hand, often spoil from other worksites or even locomotive ash.
“While those standards were fine for the time – and supported the old footbridge – they are not good enough for the type of bridges we build today. As a result, we need to change the design of the proposed footbridge and create a design for a pad foundation to support it”.

I like choo choo trains
So do I – choo choo!!
I like bridges.
They are boring – serve no purpose
Prefer tunnels – my choo choo train loves to enter tunnels
You Sainsbury’s cleaners are really bad
Don’t let them chage it
To much history getting ripped out and replaced with rubbish. And i bet the new bridge won’t last anywhere near 160 years.
Just repair it What is wrong with these people.
It’s beyond repair and not to modem standards- try reading the article
‘not to modem standards’
And yet it’s lasted 160 years? How did that happen?
Building a new one to the same design and standard as the old one would seem to be the logical thing to do, or simply repair it. A new bridge, built to ‘modern standards’, won’t last 160 years, we all know that.
Why not create a Win-Win solution? The old bridge could be carefully cut/dismantled and donated to the Isle of Wight steam railway and reassembled there and placed over the railway as a display piece. (Not as a functional footbridge of course). Then a new bridge would be no problem.
Blow it up with loads of tnt …sell the scrap …and plant some nice flowers in the crater, sod the train , they smell of piss and poo ,cost too much , and smell of piss and poo
I agree please tell your mum to take a bath
