A woman reported to be in the sea at Shanklin – for the second time in less than 24 hours – has been taken to hospital once again this afternoon (Tuesday).
As was the case yesterday, emergency services including the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and HM Coastguard descended upon Shanklin Esplanade shortly after 13:30.
Initial reports had suggested that an individual was in the water, but the situation was quickly resolved – just before plain clothed Police officers operating nearby prepared to enter the water to rescue the casualty.
Bembridge RNLI launched both its Inshore and All Weather lifeboats, but they were stood down en-route. Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team proceeded.
Island Echo understands the woman to be the same individual involved in an identical incident yesterday, which saw the casualty airlifted to St Mary’s Hospital on that occasion.

Why wasn’t she sectioned the first time?
Well she’s obviously got mental issues..so keep her in
In reply to an earlier comment, she probably wasn’t sectioned because she has behavioural problems rather than mental health. The mental health team are experienced enough so they can see far better than the average Joe Public as to what is genuine mental health and what is a cry for attention. They are also accountable for their decisions, so if there was any risk of this lady taking her life, they would have kept her in.
