A woman was airlifted to hospital from the beach at Shanklin yesterday afternoon (Monday) after being pulled from the water by a member of the public.
HM Coastguard launched a large-scale response to an emergency call received at around 16:30 reporting that a female was in distress in the sea.
2 lifeboats from Bembridge were immediately launched, with Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter – which was already airborne on training – also scrambled to the incident.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, a Senior Coastal Operations Officer and Police were also alerted.
The casualty was assessed by the Coastguard helicopter’s onboard paramedic before a decision was made to fly her directly to the helicopter landing site at Seaclose Park in Newport, where an ambulance was waiting to convey her the final distance by land ambulance.
