Police, firefighters and the RAC have been called out to a car broken down in flood water at Briddlesford Road near Downend this evening (Wednesday).
The female driver of the vehicle was travelling from Arreton towards Wootton when a lorry coming the opposite way swamped her vehicle, causing it to break down.
Panicked as to what to do, she called the RAC who not only dispatched a technician, but recommended she call Police.
As a result of alerting the Police and officers responding to the scene, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were also alerted and mobilised appliances from Newport and Ryde.
Thankfully, the woman has not required any assistance from fire crews.
The RAC are now working to recover the vehicle from the flood water near to Lynnbottom Tip.
The road has been closed in both directions.

What a joke and we are supposed to be sympathetic to their bleating on about pay and conditions…
The Police closed the road, so the lady could be assisted, fire service may of cleared the water. I hope you are never in this situation, as no one really knows what to do when faced with this in the dark. I know I would’nt.
What they get paid and their conditions have absolutely nothing to do with this situation!
What happened to equality if bloke broke down it would tough sort it out yourself…
You flooded the carburettor dear!
Why the PANIC?
If you don’t know how to cope with an incident, why should the Emergency Services have to ‘rescue’ you?
You broke down!!!
ok Smart Aleck
Who`s to say her car is either electric or diesel or even a newer model of car that does not have a carburetor
the Fire Crew where probably dispatched just in case the car was in deeper water and she may of needed help getting out of the car
.
That is “two fire crews” – to pull out a stranded car that the RAC pulled out anyway.
Must’ve been a slow night on Netflix for two crews to attend.
Your about 20 years behind mate. No carb there, it’s fuel injection…
I would think that year of car would not have a carburettor, as it would have fuel injection.
Carburettor? It’s not a Cortina
A woman on her own on a dark road, how would have coped my Dear?
Why not engage local 4×4 club to tow out. Used to use Club in snow and at Festival to get stuck motorists out.
Another stupid response
just look at the picture
what looks like a puddle?
people just drive through with out considering how deep it is
looking at the picture it is a lot deeper than to drive through at 40-50 mph
which is what speed this car was being driven at
the car caused a wave in front which caused air to be pulled up the intake of the engine
putting water into the cylinders causing a hydrostatic lock on the engine
this car will need a new engine
enter standing water at speed at your own peril
Maybe you should read what happened it was a speeding lorry which caused this
A lorry going the other way wouldn’t cause the car to break down it would spray water over the car this car broke down because as roe sprack said the water is of a depth that the air intake would suck water into the engine killing the engine the air intake on these cars is located in the wheel arch bloody stupid place to put it admittedly and the proper way to drive through flood water is enter the water at low speed and slowly build up spread as you go pushing water away from the front of the car however this water in the picture is too deep for this type of car to enter at all due to how low to the ground regular cars are and as stated the stupid location of the air intake .
How was it legally determined the lorry was speeding? Subjective reporting!
sorry that should read causing water being pulled in to the air intake
Bloody lorry drivers. I suppose they think it’s funny driving at normal speed and swamping cars. Shame a copper didn’t see it and give them a fine or do them for dangerous driving.
Poor lady.
Poor Lady indeed – the word “panicked” in the write-up was bound to attract some usual armchair responses. How sensible for a Driver to call the RAC to attend, who then gave proper advice. Tell you what, I’m glad it wasn’t me in that situation, male or female.
