For the 3rd year in a row and in stark contrast to other towns across the Island, Shanklin residents will pay less towards their town council bill.
Shanklin Town Council (STC) has been able to reduce its precept, meaning a Band D household will pay an average of 11p less — at £89.41 a year.
STC said it has a duty to help residents with a reduction, while not cutting back on services – especially as money was tight for many.
The precept will help pay for beach safety arrangements, public toilets and flowers in town. It will also provide a dedicated fund for town improvements, an increase in the monies that could be given to good causes, and school crossing patrols.
The precept has fallen since 2021 by £1.25, after residents faced a 10% hike in 2020.
A STC spokesperson said prudent financial and contractual management meant the authority was in a very fortunate position where they did not need to increase the precept, and in fact provided a slight reduction. They also attributed a lack of borrowing to fund projects — like new public toilet buildings and a community library — which has helped keep liability costs down.
In neighbouring Lake and Sandown, precepts for residents are skyrocketing up by 90.1% and 49.9% respectively. It means a Band D household in Lake will pay £98.50 a year (a £46.67 rise on last year) and Sandown Band D taxpayers will pay £218.40 (a £72.70 increase).
The town council precept also sits on top of increased fees for the Isle of Wight Council, police and fire services.

Well done Shanklin. Not easy keeping costs low. Especially with the main council dumping more and more on town and Parish councils to lower their costs by making others pick up the tab.
Shanklin needs to ensure that any house of multiple occupancy is refused permission as attracting this sort costs and ruins life for those unlucky enough to live near it.
Absolutely. Are the costs so high in Sandown because of these HMOs and the damage caused by out of control, ferral children roaming the streets smashing and destroying everything in their path? Anyone know?
Itsbloody disgraceful. I just hope everyone remembers this when the next General Election comes around. Go and vote and think very carefully which box you place your X in!!!
We certainly could do with less dusky immigrants lurking in doorways, and less low lives sitting around all day drinking. Sandown is a nasty place to live in now. Used to be really pleasant but these ‘doss houses’ for low end beings have ruined it.
They ought to be all housed in one area like Oakfield in Ryde where there habitation would hardly be noticed and their behaviour applauded by the tax credit kept breeding masses already living there.
Easier for the Police to find drugs drunks and violence if all housed in one scummy area away from tourist hot spots.
Unlike St Helens where IOW councillor Bacon who is also chair of the PC makes sure that the IOW council transfers more costs onto the parish. Last year he made a mistake with the precept that cost several thousand pounds to correct and this year they have made another mistake which I found in the minutes of the meeting of the 6th Feb. 2023.it is outrageous the way he runs the PC and still he carries on.
Surprising and brilliant news that should make the creation of a Bay area authority by combining with Lake and Sandown Councils subject to extremely detailed scrutiny.
Well best that Shanklin takes over the Isle of Wight Council. We need someone who can run things properly and not like that bunch of no goods in county hall.
I really don’t understand this difference of cost. If the IOW Council have placed a property in a specific Band then ALL properties across the island that are in the same Band SHOULD be paying the same amount for their Council Tax.
As I understand it, it is decided which Band a property is placed in depending on the value of that property. So any property valued between X and Y would be placed in Band #
Is this correct? This is how it was calculated by Parish Councils on the mainland.
Over here, You can have a property in a road, valued exactly the same as the property next door but be in a Band lower!!!!!! How does that work. Where can I find the pricing Bands, does anyone know. Please advise? Thanks.
Shanklin town council must be doing something right
