A broken-down coach is causing heavy traffic delays at the bottom of Newport High Street this afternoon (Thursday).
The coach has stopped outside County Hall near Coppins Bridge roundabout and is blocking the lanes used by traffic heading to Cowes and East Cowes/Ryde.
Traffic is building and backing up the High Street.
The lane heading toward Sandown is clear, however all traffic is utilising it to get past the stricken vehicle.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Grockle invasion to see the historic Newport christmas sights and lights (a tree on top of a fire drill tower). Hope they enjoyed their Christmas lunch at Morrisons and stroll around Church Litten park spotting festive drunks…what a treat!
Supposed to be a skilled driver… so why is it in two lane ??? Road hog…
You can’t keep the back end in the middle lane if the vehicles in the right lane don’t allow you to straddle their lane with the front end. I’m guessing you’ve never attempted driving a 40ft vehicle through there, if you had, you’d button your clueless comments. I’ve never been a bus driver but I’ve been an HGV mechanic and I’ve driven coaches through there MANY times plus other vehicles this size, unfortunately the people who don’t know how to drive HGV vehicles are always the first to pipe up about how to drive them.
Before any smart arsed comments are made, I know this is a PSV (Public Service Vehicle) and not an HGV but the driving awareness and practice is much the same, and yes I also hold a PSV licence.
I’m not trying to upset anybody, just raising awareness of the extreme skill of every PSV and HGV driver who manage to navigate our extremely tight roads every day without issues. It’s not this poor drivers fault the coach broke down in an extremely difficult location. Cut them some slack.
They are a skilled driver and that vehicle is perfectly positioned – read the highway code which states that lane lines are designed for cars and LGV/PCV vehicles need to straddle other lanes. I’d love to follow you driving.
He does seem over cautious
Well said!
The OP probably like other islanders has no licence so why you think they would read the highway code. Like most islanders spent their time claiming benefits and posting crap messages on social media.
Everybody loves a ‘know all’…NOT!, especially the ones who know nothing. I would keep your poorly thought out opinions within your own four walls.
Obviously not a skilled driver yourself lovey
You are only capable of riding a Honda Melody bike judging from your lack of knowledge..
Handy for the police to nip out and do a spot of traffic control! I won’t hold my breath
Meh, nobody cares! Maybe don’t drive then this won’t happen to you. Simples.
Its GSC main group who own Excelsior & SV, garage up Nelson Rd should have been able to mover her on, lots of Excelsior coaches based at Nelson Rd, there they do school runs on Island, for record this particular coach based in Dorchester normally, hardly holiday makers or other stupid theories posted above just an old Volvo B9 thats conked out
