The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth has been called in to examine a suspected piece of ordnance on the beach at Seaview this morning (Thursday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police were alerted to the discovery of a potential unexploded bomb by members of the public yesterday afternoon.
The scene was cordoned off overnight with Police handing the incident over to HM Coastguard.
Now, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts have arrived on the Isle of Wight to examine the object and determine whether or not it is indeed an explosive.
Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team are assisting with the incident.
If it is deemed that the object could be an explosive, it will be detonated by means of a controlled explosion.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – The object has been deemed as safe by the EOD specialists.
The Royal Navy are now standing down from the incident and all cordons have been lifted by HM Coastguard.
