Police have cordoned off a section of beach at Seaview following the discovery of a suspected unexploded piece of ordnance this afternoon (Wednesday).
Those enjoying the seaside spotted the object earlier on and alerted Hampshire Constabulary to the discovery.
A cordon has been erected around the immediate area but the tide has come in, meaning the unidentified object has been submerged.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team from Portsmouth has been made aware of the situation.
A cordon is likely to remain in place until such a time that the potential explosive item can be examined.
