Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected mortar in the West Wight this evening (Monday) after 2 locals discovered the wartime ordnance on Sunday evening.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to a stretch of coastline at Fort Victoria near Yarmouth yesterday dinner time when a couple came across the suspicious device whilst enjoying a walk along the beach.
The tide soon covered the object, so the decision was taken for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth to attend at a suitable tide today.
As the sun set in the sky and with a sterile environment created, a controlled explosion was carried out – destroying the historic device and preventing any potential harm.
The item had been found between Fort Albert and Fort Victoria.
