Residents and visitors in Ryde are being warned to take care if walking along Appley Beach today (Tuesday).
Ryde Rescue has tweeted the warning to would-be walkers after extremely heavy rainfall caused parts of the beaches sand to be moved and a channel forged into the ground.
Photos taken by the lifeboat crew show deep craters where sand has been washed into the sea from rainwater draining onto the seafront after the town, along with other parts of the Island, experienced torrential downpours yesterday evening.
A Ryde Rescue spokesperson said:
“If you are walking along Appley Beach, beware that there is now a large hole on the high water mark, now the outfall has appeared.”
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“The channel has been created by surface water run-off, and with the heavy rainfall that we have been experiencing, has meant that the water is currently still flowing.
“We are monitoring this very closely and once the flow has stopped, arrangements have been made to fill in the trenches/channels that have been created.”

clearly the definition of “deep” is different in their world.
what next, a warning that extremely deep puddles have formed on the pavements after the rain and there is a risk, that your shoelaces may get wet, if they hang over the sides of your shoes.
I have bigger holes in my teeth than that since the dentist won’t see you anymore.
Beachgoers warned that the sea is wet.
