Further cliff falls along the Shanklin – Sandown revetment this morning (Monday) have made the route impassable.
A night of heavy rain and recent bad weather has resulted in sediment and earth falling from the cliff and taking out some of the beach huts at Hope Beach.
This is just the latest in weather-related cliff falls after similar incidents, albeit not involving beach huts, occurred closer to the Sandown end earlier this week, that cliff fall was cleared within a couple of days but only re-opened again on Friday.
The revetment is currently closed from Hope Road Car Park until The Salix Beach Café.
Beach hut owners are currently retrieving their belongings from the damaged wooden structures.
It is unclear when the debris and mess will be cleared.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“Avoid walking, running or cycling on the revetment at this time. Cliff falls can take place at any time. Please proceed with caution when in the area.”

Not the safest place to place beach huts with all the rain etc.
Isnt this a continuing story of last week when the council supposedly said the cliffs were safe.
You can’t educate pork, that being the Isle of Wight Council…
The truth is, nothing will stop that area of land moving. I feel for people in Lake / Shanklin who live in cliff areas, some of those properties are stunning but lots have been in danger of moving for years. The whole area from Sandown to Ventnor and beyond is in danger of collapse at any time. Sooner or later, we’ll have a real tragedy and people will be lost.
I feel so sorry for the people with those beach huts – we seem to be going through a period of significant activity in terms of land movements – presumably a result (in part or wholly) of the dry summer and the wet weather recently. Ditto anyone who lives near a cliff or anyone in the general PO38 area. Fingers crossed for all you lovely people. Even the roads all round the island seem to be collapsing at an alarming rate. Wonder how that couple feel about their famous tunnel this week?
I know let’s approve planing for people to build tunnels through them cliffs that are falling away that’s a capital idea, oh yeah the council in its infinite lack of wisdom and intelligence already did that cos the cliffs are falling away so they must be safe honestly you couldn’t write this stupidity.
No one is building a tunnel through a cliff you total moron.
You really are as thick as shit
Your a rude little person aren’t you! Whether the tunnel is already there or being added to, the smallest amount of land movement will compromise that structure. Why risk it? Maybe to show off? You don’t really need to go to those lengths to have a nice sea view.
The tunnel is already there .get your facts straight before you gob off.
