The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Isle of Wight coast, with areas of Cowes and East Cowes expected to be affected the most.
Tuesday morning’s tide at around 10:30 is expected to be higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong Southerly Force 6 winds. The weather will result in a 0.37m increase in the tide table to 4.89 metres Chart Datum (2.30 mAOD) at Cowes.
For 1 hour either side of high water, spray overtopping of the sea defences will flood seafront roads, esplanades and car parks. Water will be high up slipways in Cowes affecting Medina Road and the Cowes Floating Bridge.
In East Cowes, sea water forced up through drains will flood roads at Albany Road, York Avenue and Castle Street.
Wednesday morning’s tide at around 11:00 is expected to be even greater. The Environment Agency will issue further advice on this tomorrow.
Residents are being urged to install flood protection for properties near the floating bridge and at Well Road in East Cowes.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 12:20 – The Environment Agency says that tonight’s high tide will see an increase of 0.4m. The tide is 0.1m lower than experienced this morning, so any impacts will be very minor.
For 1 hour either side of high water, seafront roads, esplanades and car parks may be affected by floodwater. Water will be high up slipways in Cowes, affecting Medina Road and the floating bridge. In East Cowes, some seawater may be forced up through drains affecting Albany Road.
Flooding is expected on Wednesday too, with Thursday morning’s tide also expected to be slightly higher than experienced this morning.
