Shanklin Town Council is hosting a meeting for local residents to introduce the rationale behind a new plan for The Bay area, incorporating Sandown, Lake and Shanklin.
The meeting, to be held at Shanklin Theatre next Tuesday (17th September), will explain how residents can become involved in steering the direction of regeneration, and for those who want to be directly involved the opportunities to become members of working groups and the mechanisms for volunteering. The Plan is now approved and is starting to be implemented.
Mayor Sarah Sheath has said:
“Whilst Shanklin Town Council budgets tens of thousands of pounds every year for town improvements, our community is too small to meet the criteria for major government regeneration grants.
“The Bay as a whole is the largest settlement on the Island and by developing a Bay Plan we not only benefit from pooling resources to address issues affecting the whole Bay area, but we also are large enough to meet the criteria to allow us to apply for Central Government Regeneration Grants allowing us to consider investigating larger scale infrastructure projects”.
The Plan considers mechanisms for delivering larger Infrastructure projects including:
- Cliff lift, coastal path, and steps
- Environment Agency update on Sea Wall and Groyne restoration
- Esplanade Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower
- Performing Arts Centre
Mayor Sheath continues:
“Of course, we start with two serious blights on the Shanklin economy, the ongoing closure of the A3055 (Leeson Road) and flooding in centre of Shanklin, for which updates will be provided at the meeting”.
At Tuesday’s meeting there will be presentations on what is happening regarding the closure of the A3055 (Leeson Road) and other projects around the town.
At the end of the presentations, the local Isle of Wight councillors for Shanklin and Ventnor, the Shanklin Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the Lake Vice Chair and other local Councillors will be present, together with Isle of Wight Council Officers and a representative of the Environment Agency, all available to discuss issues and try to answer questions over complimentary tea or coffee.
The Theatre bar will also be open. The Theatre will be open from 18.00 for a 18.30 start.

Sorry guys.
you lost my support as soon as the phrase ‘performing arts centre’ cropped up!
re-generation is NOT about Lovey Dovey tree hugging. It’s about generating SUSTAINABLE income for somewhere that lives by Tourism!!
What has performing arts got to do with ‘tree hugging’. Do you actually understand the value of the arts? Culturally, societally and financially? No, you’d rather sell a crap burger and an inflatable flamingo destined for the shit-filled sea
If the council are managing tens of thousands of pounds each year I’d like to know where all that money has gone . So far nothing.
Leeson Road should have been sorted months ago as with the flooding .
They sit there with their pots of gold determining where they spend islanders council tax and misused grants .
What this island needs is a completely new council that have the wellbeing of the island and its islanders up front and it’s future otherwise they will not get my vote for anything
I’m sure shanklin council tax went up 2years ago to pay for shanklin cliff lift to be painted at a cost of 800,000 and that never happened, also I reckon councillors should take some UK holidays to learn about tourism
