The Environment Agency has issued a bathing water alert for Ryde following a water pollution incident in the area.
Residents and visitors are being advised not to bathe or swim in and around Ryde until further notice.
Public health advice has also been issued warning people to avoid direct contact with contaminated water, which may contain bacteria and viruses capable of causing illness.
Those who do come into contact with the water are being urged to wash thoroughly with soap and water, as hand sanitiser does not kill all viruses that may be present.
Parents are also being advised to keep children and dogs out of the water while the alert remains in place.
Southern Water says updates can be found on its River and Sea Watch website, whilst the Environment Agency is also continuing to monitor the situation.

An utterly disgraceful state of affairs. However, whilst they continue to pollute, your water bill increases to pay for solutions to address the issue. The water companies are taking us for fools. Reduce dividends and profits to pay for the chronic neglect of the water infrastructure and stop fleecing the public.
Agreed.They should be fined every time they do this.

state of island waters on the mainland for everyone to see.

on their website for everyone to see.
I no longer swim in the sea, much safer to use a pool.
If it isn’t bad enough with all the road closures everywhere and Rachel “Abasus “Reaves forcing businesses to close due to high rates or IN payments or now hitting our holiday industry with holiday tax or added green levies on the ferry operators, now the water company are trying to put the final nail in the coffin and drive away what hoilday makers remain willing to come to the island with illegalily dumping untreated sewerage into the sea and killing our once beautiful beaches as well.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out the more shops, offices & homes you add to the sewer network the bigger the sewer treatment plant needs to be and that means constant expansion through investment back into the company. This in turns means shareholder must shoulder some of that reinvestment through prophets being used for that investment before any profit shares are given.
This should also come from developers of new sites from S106 monies as they are adding to the network so should pay a one-off payment towards it which is ring fenced into an expansion plan budget and can’t be used for anything else.
Share holders need to realise you can’t keep taking every year without reinvestment and any company that supplies vital services shouldn’t be allowed to put them and fat bonuses above delivering the services they are paid to deliver and to which the government nor the taxpayers should be made to bail them out if they fail to do so.
If a stratigic utility provider goes under due to bad management, fail to reinvest or just greedy shareholders then the government should be able to step in and renationalise it as a vital service not throw taxpayers money at them & allow them to hike prices as they did with Thames water so the taxpayers take the hit twice.
If they go bust they loose everything and the government step in and take controller to maintain that vital service.
